What is lymphedema?
Lymphedema is swelling that occurs in the arms or legs as a result of lymph node blockage. The cause may be lymph node removal, genetic predisposition, or disruption within the lymphatic pathway, which prevents lymph fluid from draining. As the fluid accumulates, swelling occurs. Lymphedema is a chronic condition that can be controlled.Aching, weakness, redness, heaviness, or tightness in the limb/ankle flexibility.
Early symptoms of lymphedema:
-
Swelling within the limb, which does not easily resolve
-
Decreased wrist
-
Rings left on the arm or leg from tight-fitting garments (e.g., socks, shoes, sleeves)
Is lymphedema curable?
At this time, lymphedema is not curable. However, although lymphedema is manageable through treatment and education, it is imperative that early and proper treatment to control the swelling begins shortly after diagnosis.
