Nerve Injuries/Compression

Physical Therapy - Nerve Injuries/Compression

Nerve compression is restriction in the space around a nerve that can compromise functioning. Our physical or occupational therapists in these cases evaluate the patient and determine which nerve is being affected based on the pattern of symptoms, the location of the symptoms, and the repetitive activity or trauma that appears to predispose the patient to this type of problem. A treatment plan for the problem may involve immobilization of the affected area, to reduce strain and pressure on the nerves and use of modalities, to reduce swelling and promote healing. When the symptoms have decreased, an exercise program involving stretching is used to decrease compression on the affected nerve. Strengthening exercises are also used, to return muscles to their previous level of function.
